ControlType harnesses the full power of your Mac's Neural Engine to transcribe your voice — instantly, accurately, and entirely on-device.
Typing is slow. Cloud voice apps send your audio to remote servers — processed, stored, and analyzed in data centres you don't control. The same words, spoken in the privacy of your home, end up somewhere you never agreed to. This is unacceptable.
Thanks to on-device AI, the days of slow typing and privacy-invasive cloud transcription are over. Leveraging the full power of your Mac's Neural Engine, ControlType processes your voice locally — instantly, accurately, and without ever touching the internet.
This is the most significant privacy upgrade for productivity on macOS. It puts your voice back in your hands and finally makes dictation something you can trust.
Free. No account required. Works completely offline.
Download .dmgEverything you need to know about ControlType.
ControlType is a macOS app that transcribes your speech into text entirely on your device using an embedded AI model. Press a global shortcut, speak, and the transcribed text is typed into whatever app is active — no cloud required.
Never. All audio processing happens locally on your Mac using the Whisper AI model. No audio, transcriptions, or usage data ever leave your device. ControlType works completely offline.
Microphone access is required to capture your speech. Audio is processed in real-time on-device and immediately discarded after transcription. Nothing is ever recorded or saved to disk.
Accessibility access allows ControlType to detect your focused text field and inject the transcribed text directly into it. It does not read, log, or transmit any existing content from your applications.
ControlType uses OpenAI's Whisper model, which delivers excellent accuracy across most accents and languages. Accuracy may vary based on background noise and speaking clarity.
Yes, completely. The Whisper model is bundled inside the app. ControlType makes zero network connections — no telemetry, no analytics, no update checks.
Open the downloaded .dmg, drag ControlType into your Applications folder, then launch it from there. On first launch, macOS will ask you to grant Microphone and Accessibility permissions.
